The SCAMPER technique is a problem-solving technique that encourages users to creatively generate innovative solutions. SCAMPER is an acronym for Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put to other uses, Eliminate, and Rearrange (or Reverse).

  • Substitute: What can be substituted or replaced (for example: components, people)
  • Combine: What can be combined or integrated? (for example: other features, devices)
  • Adapt: What can be added, adjusted, or modified? (new elements or change existing functions)
  • Modify: What can be modified? (shape, size, color, form?)
  • Put to other uses: Can the product be used differently, can it be used in another industry?
  • Eliminate: What can be removed or simplified?
  • Reverse: What would happen if the order or direction in the production process were reversed? Can anything be swapped or flipped?
