Letters can be broadly classified into 2 types:

  • Formal / Business / Official letters
  • Informal letters

Letter writing in ICSE exam carries a maximum of 10 marks:

  • Proper layout: 2.5 marks
  • Subject matter: 2.5 marks
  • Expression: 5 marks

Proper layout: Depending on whether it is a formal or informal letter, the letter needs to be written in the right format. The format is different for informal and formal letters.

Subject matter: How effectively have you covered the subject? The communication should be brief and relevant to the subject.

Expression: Keep the following in mind:

  • The letter needs to have a nice introduction and concluding sentence.
  • It should be nicely structured and should flow in a logical manner, by dividing the subject matter into paragraphs.
  • You should communicate using simple and direct language.
