The three phases (stages) of the Indian National Movement.

The history of the Indian National Movement can be broadly classified into three phases (stages):

1. The Early Nationalist Phase (1885-1905): This was the phase of moderate nationalism when educated leaders from the Indian National Congress (INC) wanted to do their bit for the country, but by remaining loyal to the British crown.

2. The Assertive Phase (1905-1918) (some refer to the period 1906-1916): This was the period when the country witnessed the Swadeshi Movement and there was a ride in militant nationalism (Extremism).

3. The Gandhian Phase (1919-1947) (some refer to the period 1917 to 1947): Also known as the Mass Phase of the National Movement, this period is known as the Gandhian era. In this final phase of the Nationalist Movement, Mahatma Gandhi emerged as the biggest leader and his principles of non-violence and satyagraha were mainly used to free India from British rule.
