Academic Writing

“Our Declaration” by Danielle Allen is a book that explores the Declaration of Independence and its significance in American history.

Allen, a political theorist and classicist, delves into the language and ideas of the Declaration, examining the principles of equality and liberty articulated by the Founding Fathers. She argues that the Declaration is not just a historical document but a living text that continues to shape the ongoing American experiment.

One of the chapters in the book explains the meaning of the word “self-evident” in the Declaration through the use of syllogism, a three-part deductive argument comprising of two premises and conclusion. The book makes readers appreciate the principles through which United States is governed and how these ideas shape political discussions even today.

Through a close analysis of the Declaration, Allen encourages readers to engage with its ideas and consider their relevance to contemporary issues of justice and citizenship. Overall, the book provides a thoughtful and thought-provoking exploration of one of America’s foundational documents.
