“Beside the tree is the throne. Seeing it empty gives me the best idea. Today I will be the Princess! I sit on the throne. “Now I will spend every minute on the throne,’ I say.”

Question: What is the throne? Whom does it belong to?

Answer: The throne is the wheelchair. It belongs to Penny (Penelope Piper).

Question: Which word in these lines means the opposite of worst?

Answer: Best

Question: Why does Patty want to sit on the throne?

Answer: Patty wants to sit on the throne because she wants to feel like a princess.

>Then I ride to the corner of the street. I’ve been pushing so hard that I feel like both my arms are broken. Some grown-ups are walking towards me. They look at me and my throne, and then they turn away fast, like I do when I’m watching a scary movie.

Question: Does Patty Jean find it very easy to push the wheelchair? How do we know?

Answer: The wheelchair is not easy to push because the moment Patty gives it a hard push, the wheelchair dumps her on the sidewalk and lands upside down on her.

Answer: On looking at Patty Jean and her throne, grown-ups turn away fast, because they feel uncomfortable seeing a disabled person.

Question: Do you agree with Patty Jean that the Princess is a good name for Penny? Give a reason for your answer.

Answer: Yes. Princess is a good name for Penny because it seems that she doesn’t have to do much, with other kids have to do.

Question: Why had Patty Jean not gone to camp like all her other friends?

Answer: Patty did not go to the camp because her mother had to spend money instead on buying new braces for Penelope’s legs.

Question: What did Patty think when she first saw her parents outside the house?

Answer: Patty thought here parents would scold her for taking away the wheelchair but her parents were actually concerned for Patty’s safety.

Question: Describe how Patty Jean’s feelings for Penny changed by the end of the story. What does Patty Jean realize?

Answer: Patty realizes that the grass is always greener on the other side. She realises that it is not easy being in the wheelchair all the time.

Question: Why does Patty call her sister Princess?

Answer: Patty calls her sister ‘Princess Pooh’ because all day she just sits on her throne (with wheels) and tells everybody what to do. Thinking everyone loves the princess not her, Patty is jealous of her sister.

Question: What do Penelope’s parents do for her?

When Penelope is riding her throne, her Dad wheels her around while her Mom carries her crutches.

Question: What are the things that Penelope does not have to do, but Patty has to do?

The chores that Patty doesn’t like doing are carrying packages while shopping, riding for hour on a school bus to get there, cleaning the bathroom, wearing the uniform. Penelope is exempted from doing all these.
