There are many theories about leadership as there are philosophers, researchers and university professors who have studied and ultimately published their theories of leadership.

Definitions of leadership changeover time, is defined by culture/country and paradigm. Most leadership theories are based on the western ideas although recently more research is available from a wider range of countries.

Leadership is the ability to influence a group towards achieving a common goal.

Global Leadership is the leadership of individuals who influence and bring about significant positive changes in firms, organizations, and communities by facilitating the appropriate level of trust, organizational structures and processes and involving multiple stakeholders, resources, cultures under the various conditions of temporal, geographical and cultural complexity. Global leadership competencies encompass personality traits, knowledge, and skills, as well as behaviors.

Development of leadership theories over the years: Great Man Theory, Trait Theory, Behavioural Theory, Contingency Theory, Situational Theory, Transactional Theory, Transformational Theory, and others.

Various leadership theories: Trait Approach, Leadership Styles (Autocratic Style, Democratic Style, Laissez-Faire Style), Leadership Skills, Situational Leadership, Transactional Leadership, Transformational Leadership, Charismatic Leadership, Vertical Dyad Linkage, Leader-Member Exchange, Servant Leadership.

In future, organizations may depend on virtual workers and gig workers to be leaders of teams. Leaders may emerge from the gig workforce. Some of this is currently seen with crowdsourcing workers, as people act as leaders in current online worker communities, influencing workers to work with particular requesters, and on particular tasks.
