Project Topic: Environmental Issues in Urban India- A Case Study of Waste Management in Delhi NCR region. Your written work must be complemented with relevant pictures, tables, maps and graphs.
Structure to be followed:
Introduction. a. Definition of environmental degradation. b. Sources of waste leading to environmental degradation. c. Impact of waste accumulation on landscape, air, water and human health. The main body of the project – A case study of degrading air and water quality in Delhi NCR region.
Location of the study area. i) Write the latitudinal and longitudinal extent of Delhi. [ Stick map of India—shade DELHI on it. On the city map of Delhi, show River Yamuna. ii) Show the transport routes from Mumbai (air, road, and rail). Attach a map of your route.
Discuss the physical environment of Delhi- month-wise temperature, rainfall, humidity and soil characteristics. Stick climatic graphs.
Degradation of river Yamuna- Causes and effects. i) Give an account of waste generated daily from different sources in Delhi. Validate your discussion with data and represent the data using graphs. ii) Discuss the impact of waste disposal on the river Yamuna. Discuss about the water quality status of river Yamuna.
Degrading air quality in Delhi- causes and effects i) Causes- a. Burning agricultural residues b. Vehicular pollution c. Industrial pollution. ii) Draw a pie diagram to indicate the percentage share of pollution from each source. iii) Effects of air pollution- a. Smog b. Increasing respiratory disorders (discuss with data) c. Analysis of deteriorating AQI.
Sustainable Waste Management Practices: a. Waste Segregation: Discuss how various sectors, such as hotels and industries, manage waste segregation (e.g., separating wet and dry waste, hazardous waste). b. Kitchen Waste Management: Investigate how hotels or households manage kitchen waste, focusing on composting, recycling, or disposing of food scraps. c. Case Study of Delhi Haat: Explore waste management practices in local markets or cottage industries, such as Delhi Haat. Interview vendors or artisans to learn about waste disposal methods and recycling initiatives in these sectors.
Interviews and Case Studies i) Interview a Hotelier: Talk to hotel management or staff about waste segregation practices, how they manage kitchen waste, and whether they engage in composting or recycling. How do hotels contribute to or mitigate pollution? ii) Interview a Housekeeping Staff member: Conduct interviews with housekeeping staff in the hotel to understand their waste sorting and disposal practices. How do they educate guests or residents about waste management? iii) Visit Delhi Haat or similar locations where cottage industries operate. Ask artisans or vendors about the types of waste generated and how they dispose or reuse their waste (e.g., packaging materials, fabric scraps, etc.).
Conclusion: Solutions/steps taken by the central government and the state government to combat challenges posed by pollution, industrial growth and tourist activities. Summarize the main findings of your research, highlighting the challenges Delhi NCR faces with waste management and pollution. Offer practical solutions or strategies that could improve waste management and reduce pollution in the region.
