Question: What are the four major domains of the earth?

Answer: The four major domains of the earth are : – Lithosphere, Hydrosphere, Atmosphere and Biosphere

Question: Name the different layers of atmosphere.

Answer:- The different layers of atmosphere are:

  • i. Troposphere
  • ii. Stratosphere
  • iii. Mesosphere
  • iv. Thermosphere
  • v. Exosphere

Question: Why is the earth called the ‘blue planet’?

Answer: More than 71 percent of earth is covered with water, which makes it appear blue when seen from space. Therefore it is also called the ‘blue planet’.

Question: Why is the Northern Hemisphere called the Land Hemisphere?

Answer: Major portion of the northern hemisphere is comprised of land bodies (continents). Five out of seven continents lies in the Northern hemisphere. Therefore the Northern Hemisphere is also called the Land Hemisphere.

Question: Why is the Biosphere important for living organisms?

Answer: The biosphere is the narrow zone of contact between land, water and air. Life exists only in this zone, as the conditions are favorable to support life. Therefore, biosphere is important for living organisms.

Question: Name the major continents of the earth. Name the two continents that lie entirely in the Southern Hemisphere.

Answer: The major continents of the earth are:- i. Asia ii. Europe iii. Africa iv. North America v. South America vi. Australia vii. Antarctica.
The two continents that lie entirely in the Southern Hemisphere inlcude Australia and Antarctica.

Question: The mountain range that separates Europe from Asia (i) the Andes (ii) the Himalayas (iii) the Urals?
Answer: iii. The Urals

Question: The continent of North America is linked to South America by (i) an Isthmus (ii) a Strait (iii) a Canal?
Answer: i. an Isthmus

Question: The domain of the earth consisting of solid rocks is (i) the Atmosphere (ii) the Hydrosphere (iii) the Lithosphere
Answer: iii. The Lithosphere

Question: Which is the largest continent (i) Africa (ii) Asia (iii) Australia?
Answer: ii. Asia

The Four Domains of the Earth (Social Studies) Class 4

The four Domains of the Earth is a chapter in Social Studies for Class 4 students. The chapter helps students understand the world we live in, and helps develop an interest in the domains of our planet.

The Four Domains of the Earth:

  • Atmosphere: The blanket of air surrounding the earth
  • Lithosphere (or the crust): The outermost surface of earth, comprising of solid rocks and soil
  • Hydrosphere: Water covers a big area of the earth’s surface and this area is called the Hydrosphere
  • Biosphere: It is the narrow area where land, water and air combine.

Q: What is biosphere? What is its importance?

Ans- The narrow zone of contact between land, water and air where all kinds of life is possible is called biosphere. The biosphere is important as it supports several varieties of organisms, both plants and animals.
