Listening and responding
By the end of class VIII students should be able to:
- Listen and understand the main points and some details from an extended dialog or a short spoken text
- Understand a verbal stimulus and respond briefly to it without prompts
- Apply listening strategies according to the text and the task set for it (e.g. selective listening)
Speaking
By the end of class VIII students should be able to:
- Ask for and give directions
- Give simple instructions about everyday tasks
- Retell using familiar language a sequence of events which happened in the recent past
- Describe in simple language incidents from their own experience
- Prepare and present a project in simple but correct language

Reading and responding
By the end of class VIII students should be able to:
- Read for gist or purpose and apply the requisite reading strategies
- Read and understand the main points and some detail from a more complex written text
- Read aloud with confidence, enjoyment and expressions from a known text aiming for authentic pronunciation and intonation
Writing
By the end of class VIII students should be able to:
- Write a short paragraph on a topic already discussed in class with slightly more complex sentence structures (e.g. using the causal conjunction “weil” and “Infinitive mit zu”)
- Write a short text (e.g. mail) about recent events and experiences in the past
- Write short texts adhering to the syntactical and orthographical rules learned in class
Intercultural Awareness
By the end of class VIII students should be able to:
- Identify shopping destinations in German speaking countries for specific objects
- Recognise the general layout of a city in German speaking countries and find a specific location on a city map
- Compare the layout of a house and a young persons room in a German speaking country and identify similarities and differences to one’s own.
Knowledge about language
By the end of class VIII the students should be able to:
- Understand and construct more complex German sentences using the causal conjunction “weil” and “Infinitive with zu”
- Understand the use of prepositions for giving information on time, place and direction
- Apply his/her knowledge of word order and sentence structure in conjunction with pictorial texts in both spoken and written language
