What are Cash Crops?

We grow crops not only for food but also for selling in the market. Cash crops are those crops that are sold in the market and from these crops, other products are made.

For example, sugar cane is a cash crop. Sugarcane acts as a raw material for several products in the agro-based industry. Sugarcane is used to make sugar, jaggery, and many other products.

Similarly, Groundnut, Mustard and Soya bean are also cash crops as they are used to produce various other products, such as oil.

So cash crops are crops that are valuable commercially.

Oil Seeds

Oil-seeds are those seeds (crop) from which oil can be extracted. For example, groundnut, soya bean, mustard, and more.

Groundnut

Groundnut is a Rabi crop for Orissa and South India, whereas, for other parts of India, it is considered a Kharif crop. Groundnuts are of two types: Runner and Bunch.

• Temperature required is 20 to 25 degree Celcius.
• Rainfall required is 50 to 100 cm.
• Requires Loamy soil
• Places in India where it is grown – Gujarat, Telangana and Tamil Nadu (TN). The leading producer of groundnut is Gujarat.

Uses of Groundnuts

Groundnuts can be eaten in several ways. Groundnut oil has several uses – It is used as cooking oil, it is used to make medical emulsions.

Mustard

Mustard is a Rabi crop, which means it needs low temperature for its growth.

Uses of Mustard: Mustard is used in curries, mustard leaves are eaten as vegetables, we use Mustard oil as cooking oil.
