Overview of the Chapter

Dear Mrs. Naidu is an extract from the novel of the same name by Mathangi Subramanian. Twelve-year old Sarojini writes a letter to the freedom fighter and poet, the late Mrs. Sarojini Naidu as part of a school assignment. Sarojini’s teacher gave her an assignment asking her to write a letter to someone whom she would like to get to know better. The girl decides to write the letter to freedom fighter Sarojini Naidu.

Q. Why does Sarojini say that she would not have been able to fight against the Britishers?
Ans: Sarojini said that she would not have been able to fight against the Britishers as she did not have the courage them. They also had a lot of spies which our country did not have.

Q. Why did Sarojini Naidu locked herself in a room for a whole day?

Ans: Sarojini Naidu’s parents wanted her to speak English but she disagreed with it as she was more comfortable speaking in Bengali so as a protest she locked herself in a room for a full day.

Q. What have you learned about Sarojini’s view of adult?

Ans: Sarojini thinks of adult’s as people who do not like being asked questions.

Q. After reading the lesson would you say that Sarojini and Mrs. Naidu might have more in common than their name? Why or why not?

Ans: No, I don’t think that Sarojini had anything in common with Mrs. Naidu, except their first name. Mrs. Sarojini Naidu used to fight for things she considered right, and had a more comfortable life while growing up. She was she was also well read and exceptionally talented.
