Diana George Changing The Face Of Poverty: Analysis

“Changing the Face of Poverty” is an article written by Diana George that examines how poverty is represented by nonprofit organizations, such as Habitat for Humanity hose aim is to help people in poverty.

George argues that such organizations perpetuate a misleading image of what poverty looks like. By using black and white dismal images of thin children wearing torn and ragged children, showing dilapidated buildings, nonprofit organizations create stereotypes which ay not accurately depict the reality of poverty in America today.

The author emphasis the need to better represent poverty to foster a better understanding of the issue.

Requirements

Read Diana George’s “Changing the Face of Poverty”, and answer the questions. Elaborate and give examples if needed.

Q1. How, according to Diana George, is poverty represented by nonprofit agencies such as Habitat for Humanity? What problems does George identify as a result of such representation?

Q2. George opens her analysis with a bell hooks quote, followed by descriptions of how frequently she encounters charities near Thanksgiving. How do the quote and the description appeal to different AUDIENCES?

Q3. The Children, Inc., ad that George refers to is reprinted here on page 750. What does George mean by the “emotional overload” of this image? Why do you think the Oxfam envelope promises not to include images like this?

Q4. What main PURPOSE is George’s textual analysis intended to serve? Where is that purpose made explicit? What other purposes might her essay serve?

You may use any ad that tries to influence opinion on political or social issue to aid in Writing. Analyze the content of the ad , both text and visuals to depict how the issue has been represented through the ad and how effective it is in meeting its objectives.
